Instead I met my friend Alex for coffee then get to see the sweet bike he’s assembling, try his home-brewed beer and discover an unknown talent of his. Then I get Rich’s Touareg key working again and find a classic ’61 Thunderbird while getting the VW washed. Picked up pizzas from DelFina and ice cream from Bi-Rite before watching the horrendous “Longhorns” at Matt and Miguels. So much for my thinking that a gay film would be better than the straight one. Oh well, next time.
You are so off on your Magic Mike skewing reasons. Hasn’t got anything to do with the fear of scaring off straight men. This flick’s audience was NEVER STRAIGHT MEN. It’s straight women. And straight women fantasies.
I remember after seeing The Talented Mr. Ripley when I was in the ladies room, the vitrol a bulk of the women had for the movie…because they thought they were going to see a love triangle where both men wanted Gwyneth Paltrow. They were looking for their fantasy. I was pretty fucking appalled at how shallow & oblivious those women were, only to remember I was in Los Angeles, after all.
AS I haven’t seen it, can’t tell if all the homoeroticism is told with a nod and a wink. But the marketers know, straight women out number gay men by leaps and bounds. And gay guys would go regardless.
